Snow was the fourth of eight children of Thomas (Tom) Thomson Mercer (born 1890 in Selkirkshire, Scotland) and Jeanie Allan (born 1894 in Roxburgshire, Scotland. Tom was a Millhand when he immigrated in 1910, arriving in Brisbane, QLD on board the Owestry Grange. Jeanie arrived in Brisbane, QLD with her parents and siblings in 1911 on board the Paparoa. Tom was working as a Labourer in Ipswich, QLD when he and Jeanie married in 1916. Tom enlisted briefly in the AIF in WWI (Private; Service No:24052) and in the ACMF in WWII (Private: Service No:Q89366). Tom and Jeanie settled in Ipswich where Tom worked as a Storeman, before moving to Sherwood in Brisbane in the mid 1930s where he worked as a Cook and Baker.

In May 1943 Snow enlisted in the Army (Private; Service Nos:QX53107/Q269274) and was attached to 2/2 Machine Gun Battalion when he was Discharged in October 1946. Brother Hector George (Private; Service No:Q47829) and Brothers-in-Law Alwyn McLean (Private; Service No:QX54831) and John Baxter McCorquodale (Corporal; Service No:Q145416) also served in WWII. Brother Robert (Barnie) served in the Korean War (Lance Corporal; Service No:14435).

Snow was working as a Coal Miner in Ipswich, QLD in 1950 when he married Mearl Teresa Buchan (born 1929 in Barcaldine, QLD). Following Mearl's death in 1956, Snow married Gwenda Elsie Whiteway (born 1928 in Palmwoods, QLD). Snow and Gwenda settled at Corinda in Brisbane, QLD where Snow worked as a Coal Miner. He died in 1985 and Gwenda in 2016.
