From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
79 years ago today, on the Sunday of the 4th July 1943, Sapper Maurice Alexander McHenry, Australian Corps Signal Company (Reg No-20453), iron moulder from "Windownee", 11 Edward Street, West Footscray, Victoria and 11 Elizabeth Street, Mayfield, New South Wales and 1 Barclay Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., father of seven, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 50. CATHOLIC 2-59. 125.
Born at West Footscray, Victoria on the 6th December 1892 to John and Mary McHenry nee Blayney; husband of Rose T McHenry nee Campbell (married 1921, Newcastle, N.S.W., died?), Maurice enlisted May 1917 with the 3rd Divisional Signal Company at Melbourne, Victoria.
Admitted to hospital 31.1.1918 (influenza).
Maurice returned home October 1919, being discharged on the 26th November 1919.
Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.
Mr. McHenry’s grave plaque gives us no indication of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Lest We Forget.
