George was the eldest of four children on Norman Metcalfe (born 1892 in Brisbane, QLD) and Alice May Collins (born 1888 in NSW). Norman and Alice married in 1912 in Cairns, QLD and taised their family there.
George was living in Tully, QLD and working as a Labourer when he married Gwendoline Mary Duell (born 1918 in Tully, QLD) in 1939. George served with the ACMF from 1942 to 1943 as a Private (Service No: Q221805) with 18 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps (QLD). He and Gwensoline settled in Brisbane, QLD where George worked as a Labourer. He died in Brisbane in 1963
