William (Bill) was the second of four children of Norman Metcalfe (born 1892 in Brisbane, QLD) and Alice May Collins (born 1888 in NSW). Norman and Alice married in Cairns, QLD in 1912 and raised their children there until they Divorced in 1923.

Bill married Eva Isabel Moore (born 1917 in Cairns, QLD) in 1937 in Cairns and they had three children before Bill enlisted in the Australian Army in 1940. He served with 2/26 Australian Infantry Battalion as a Lieutenant (Service Nos: 3905004/QX3842). Bill was a PoW in 1944, and returned to Australia in 1949, when he and Eva Divorced.

Bill's brothers - George (Service No: (Q221805), Norman (Service Nos:QX38182/Q109/263), and Edward (QX51331/Q38941) - served in WWII.

Bill was at Repatriation Hospital No 22 in Heidelberg, Victoria when he met his second wife Jeanette Marcia Read MacKrill (born 1916 in Tongala, Victoria). Jeanettw was a Dietician at the Hospital and they married in 1949 before living in Urangan in Pialba, QLD where Bill was a 'Fisherman' for a short period of time.

Bill and Jeanette moved back to Heidelberg, Victoria where Bill served in the Australian Army as a Lieutenant (Service No: 3/40085) with C Coy 3rd Battalion 3RAR in Korea. By 1954 Bill was back in Heidelberg, Victoria, where he lived until his death in 1967
