Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Among the recent new year awards occurs the name of Lieutenant-Colonel J. H. Phipps, who received the D.S.O. He was in medical practice at Mosman, before he left for the front
as major in the 5th Field Ambulance. He sailed in June, 1915, for Gallipoli, where he was on duty until the evacuation. He was then promoted to lieutenant-colonel in command of the 5th Field Ambulance, and has since been on active service in France. He is the eldest son of the late Dr. G. Constantine Phipps, M.D., of Manchester, England, and County Cork, and Mrs. Phipps, of "Disley," Darling Point, and Leura.
