Donald Keith Miller - QX31253 - Wooroolin WW11 Honour Board
Donald William Miller was born 16 MAR 1923 at Gatton the son of William & Minnie Miller. In 1929 the Miller family moved to Wooroolin and Donald was enrolled at Wooroolin School as pupil no 669 on 23 Sep 1929. Donald completed schooling at Wooroolin in Apr 1937 and I guess he worked as a farmer like his father. His mother was the sister of Frederick & Vic Kapernich and Anna Strenzel! He should be in the 1930 photo taken at the Wooroolin School Picnic – shame no names, or not many, for this pic.
On 7 Apr 1942, aged just 19 years, Donald enlisted in the Australian Army. His records are not yet available on the NAA website but the Nominal Rolls show he served in the 2/15 Infantry Battalion, the same one as both Leslie Pedersen & Col Grayson! Donalds Uncle Frederick Kapernick joined the army just 3 months later on 28 Jul 1942.
The story of the 2/15 available on the Australian War Memorial website. https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/U56058
Donald would have served in New Guinea at the same time as Col Grayson and Les Pedersen.
Donald was discharged from the army on 26 Jun 1946 and married Moira Clark in 1948. By 1949 Donald was the Business Proprietor of the Kiosk at Picnic Point together with his wife, Sister and Parents. By 1954 all the Miller family were living at Wynnum where Donalds parents owned/ran the Bon Ton Café.
Donald died in 2012, after living at Lennox Heads.
