Herbert was born in Gloucestershire, England in 1872, eighth of seventeen children of James Frank Gannaway (b1838 in Hampshire, England) and Emma Mary Parsons (b1838 in Devonshire, England). James was a Missionary Student in 1857 when he and Emma married in Hampshire, and in 1861 was a Congregational Minister/Missionary when he and Emma travelled to Jamestown in India, where James was a Missionary with the London Missionary Society. Returning to England in 1866, James and Mary lived in Bedfordshire and Kent, where James was a Congregational Minister. In 1881 James and Emma immigrated, arriving in Melbourne with their nine children on board the Superb. The family settled in Melbourne, where James was a Minister, and Farmer. In 1895 James was imprisoned for seven years - Emma and some children moved to Hawke's Bay in New Zealand, where James joined them following his release from prison.
Herbert was a Farmer in 1894 in Melbourne when he married Mary Ann Bradley (b1872 in Kent, England) - Mary had immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1884, arriving in Melbourne on board the John Elder. By 1898 Herbert and Mary had moved to Albany in Western Australia, and settled in the Albany Region (Torbay Junction, Martyup Siding, Bornholm), where they raised their family and Herbert was a Farmer and Postmaster. Following his Discharge from the Army in 1917, Herbert and Mary remained in the Albnay District, and Herbert was a Farmer and Horticulturalist at Young's Siding. Both Herbert and Mary died in Albany in 1950 - Mary in February and Herbert in April.
