After his enlistment in the Australian Army, the Colliery (mine) he was employed with, challenged his enlistment, because his employment with the mining industry, deemed an essential service, and he was discharged. Edward was later injured in an accident in the Aberdare Extended mine. He was working as a rope rider, holding skips together, when he slipped and was paralysed. He spent eight years at the Ipswich General Hospital as a patient. He had some mobility in a motorised wheelchair.
