John was the second of seven children of John Aloysius Molloy (born 1882 in Ipswich, QLD) and Anne (Annie) Veronica Byrne (born 1884 at Mt Pleant via Ipswich, QLD). John Snr was a Labourer in Ipswich, QLD in 1910 when he married Annie. They settled in Ipswich to raise their family and John Snr worked as a Labourer and Striker on the Railways. Following Annie's death in 1934, John Snr moved to Brisbane and later remarried.
John was working as a Carpenter in Ipswich, QLD when he enlisted in the Army in 1941. He was a Sapper (Service No:Q128262) attached to 1 Bomb Disposal Coy RAE when he was Discharged in November 1943. Brothers Rody (Lance Corporal; Service Nos:QX56452/Q128290) and Bernard (Private; Service No:Q107718) also served in WWII.
John married Maureen May in the mid 1940s and they settled in Ipswich, QLD where John worked as a Carpenter. In the late 1950s John and Maureen relocated to Goodna, QLD where John continued working as a Carpenter. Maureen died in 2013.
