Rody was the eldest of six children of John Aloysius Molloy (born 1882 in Ipswich, QLD) and Ann (Annie) Veronica Byrne (born 1884 in Ipswich, QLD). John was a Labourer in Ipswich, QLD when he and Annie married in 1910. They settled in Ipswich, QLD where John worked on the Railways as Striker, Following Annie's death in 1934, John remarried.

Rody was awarded a University Scholarship in January 1929 to study at the Teachers' Training College. He was a Teacher in Ipswich in 1939 when he married Mary Costello (born 1914 in Ipswich, QLD). Rody and Mary settled in Ipswich, and in August 1943 Rody enlisted in the Australian Army. He was a Lance Corporal (Service Nos:QX56452/Q128290) with 4 Field Coy when he was Discharged in January 1946. Brother Bernard (Private; Service No:Q107718) served with the ACMF.

Rody and Mary remained in Ipswich, QLD where Rody was a School Teacher. He died in 1972 and Mary in 1977.
