Ernest was the sixth of eleven children of William George Munt (born 1859 in Oxfordshire, England) and first wife Isabella (Bella) Cully (born 1859 in Ipswich, QLD). William immigrated to Brisbane, QLD in 1874, and was working in Ipswich, QLD as a Labourer when he married Bella in 1881. William and Bella lived in Ipswich, where William was a Cordial Maker. He remarried following Bella's death in 1921.

Ernest was a Labourer and Firewood Sawyer in Ipswich, QLD and enlisted in the AIF in January 1915. He served as a Private and Sapper (Service No:8954) with 6th Field Coy Engineers and 2nd Field Coy Engineers. Ernest was Discharged in August 1919 and returned to Ipswich, QLD and worked as a Labourer.

In 1920 Ernest married Elizabeth Emily Harvey (born 1897 in Ipswich, QLD) - Emily was a Waitress. Ernest and Emily settled in Ipswich, where Ernest was working as a Labourer in July 1940 when he enlisted in the ACMF as a Private (Service No:Q187592). He was attached to 1 Garrison Battalion when he was Discharged in August 1944. Half brother Gordon Selwyn Munt (RAN, Service No:3391) and Brother-in-Law Mervyn Samuel Molloy (Service Nos:QX58592/Q128385) served in WWII.

Ernest and Elizabeth remained in Ipswich QLD, where Ernest worked as a Labourer. He died in 1962 and Elizabeth in 1974.
