Dad never spoke alot about his time in Japan , we knew he had been injured in the Earthquake of 1946 which his service records showed, when he told us that he tried to leave hospital earlier , his records again confirmed this (Dad hated Hospital stays), he told us alot about the weather, the typhoons etc and said thats how he learnt to play cards.
He was a joker and Character, and hated being called Flo (short for florence like the famous nurse in our family) In truth he spoke more of his illegal underaged service in Borneo and how hurt he was that his brother spotted him and turned him in.
As to japan he told us about the constant patrols, the explosives he had watched blown, getting so clogged up from the dust that was always around the new buildings and houses being built, He would never say what he had seen in Hiroshima, he only said that the place smelt bad and so did a town he helped deliver prisoners to for work.
He was a great Father and he was taken from us far too soon, but it was because of him I enlisted.
