Thomas was the fourth of six children of John Greig Smith (b1850 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and Margaret Jane Clacher (b1854 in Brisbane, QLD). John (a Clerk) and Margaret married in 1875 in Brisbane, QLD - John had immigrated in 1857 with his parents and siblings. John and Margaret lived in Brisbane, Esk, Bundaberg, Pioneer and Airdmillan where John worked as a Clerk, Bookkeeper and Sugar Boiler.
Thomas worked as a Labourer in Esk and was a Cream Tester in Harrisville in 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF. He served with the 41st Infantry Battalion (Service No:2392) in France and was WiA on two occasions (October 1917 and August 1918). Younger brother Archie (Private; Service No:2399) enlisted in May 1916 and the brothers Embarked together on board HMAT A33 Boonah with 41st Infantry Battalion.
In Scotland in 1919, Thomas married Isabella Willamina Robinson (nee Fairbairn; b1882 in Aberdeen, Scotland) - Isabella was Divorced and working as a Photographer's Assistant.
Thomas and Isabella lived briefly in Harrisville on the Darling Downs in QLD where Thomas worked as an Agent before settling at Dulong near Nambour where Thomas was a Dairy Farmer. In the 1930s they relocated to Brisbane where Thomas worked as a Chainman and Storeman. Thomas served in WWII (Corporal; Service No:Q164894), as did his Step Son George John Robinson (WOII; Service No:QX9211). Following Isabella's death in 1947 Thomas moved to Toowoomba where he died in 1965.
