EDGAR WESLEY PAYNE was born at Mandurama, New South Wales, on 2nd April, 1896, the son of Mr. John Payne and Mrs. Wilhelmina Payne. He was educated at the Superior Public School, Cowra, and entered the service of the Bank at Lockhart on 19th September, 1913.
Edgar Payne enlisted on 27th February, 1915, and was engaged in active service in the Suez Canal zone from June of that year until June, 1916, when he was transferred to France and Belgium. He was on the latter front from the end of June, 1916, until January, 1919, having in the meantime been promoted to corporal in the 15th Army Service Corps, and transferred from the 2nd Division to the 5th Divisional Train.
