Add my storyBiography contributed by Chris Buckley
Herbert was the second of six children of Thomas Nobbs (b1883 in Durham, England) and Alice Jessie Cowan Holbrook (b1891 in Caboolture, QLD). Thomas was four years of age when he immigrated with his parents and siblings, arriving in Mayborough, QLD on board the Merkala in 1888. Thomas (a Labourer at Bunya Creek, Wide Bay QLD) and Alice married in 1914 in Bunya Creek at Kandanga via Gympie QLD. They settled in Kandanga, where Thomas was a Labourer before moving to Gympie in the early 1930s - Thomas was a Dairy Farmer.
Herbert was working as a Farm Labourer in 1939 when he enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:Q16093). He was attached to 9/49 Infantry Battalion when he enlisted In the Field with the AIF (Private; Service No:QX37902). Herbert served in Milne Bay (30 July 1942 - 6 January 1943 and 26 May 1943 - 6 October 1943) and Aitape (24 November 1944 - 4 February 1946). Herbert was a Private attached to 2/5 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in April 1946. Brother Robert Edward (Service No:QX37890) also served in WWII.
By 1949 Herbert had married Phylis Winnifred Halse (b1926 in Brisbane, QLD) and was living in Sydney NSW where he worked as a Striker for the NSW Government Railways. Herbert died in 1959 and Phylis died in 1995.
