Bert was the fourteenth of fifteen children of Sidney Nunn (born 1872 in Ipswich, QLD) and Selina Rose Hawkins (aka Rose; born 1877 in Hampshire, England). Rose arrived in Cooktown, QLD with her parents in 1884 on board the Dacca. Sidney was a Miner in Ipswich, QLD when he married Rose in 1895 and they raised their family at Dinmore, Ipswich where Sidney was a Miner until his death in 1919.

Bert had worked as a Labourer at Dinmore, Ipswich and was a Signwriter when he enlisted in the ACMF in March 1941. He was a Sapper (Service No:Q76440) with 16 Australian Field Coy RAE when he enlisted in the Army on 20 February 1943. Bert was a Sapper (QX49537) with 16 Australian Field Coy RAE - promoted to Lance Corporal in April 1942, then reverting to Sapper. He served in Merauke (1943/1944), Bougainville (1944) and Rabaul (1945) and was Discharged on 20 December 1945.

In December 1945 Bert married Evelyn Ruby May Young (nee Bell; born 1908 in Ipswich, QLD). Bert and Evelyn settled at Dinmore in Ipswich, QLD where Bert worked as a Labourer. He died in 1998 and Evelyn died in 1993.
