Cornelius was the fourth of six children of Cornelius O'Connor Snr (born 1848 in Ireland) and Mary Wilson (born 1857 in Ireland). In 1887 Cornelius Snr was a Farmer at Crows Nest on the Darling Downs in QLD  when he married Mary. They raised their family at Djuan, Crows Nest where Cornelius Snr was a Farmer until his death in 1922.

Cornelius was a Farmer at Mountain Camp, Crows Nest in 1925 when he married Mary Ruth Westcott (born 1899 in Mitchell, Maranoa, QLD). Cornelius' sister Ellen had married Mary's brother Roy in 1920. Cornelius and Mary settled at Miora in Mitchell, QLD where he was a Grazier. In July 1942 Cornelius enlisted in the ACMF and served as a Private (Service No:Q229050) with 19 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps Roma until his Discharge in October 1945. Brother in Law Robert (Roy) Westcott (Lance Corporal, Service No:2913) served in WWI.

By 1958 Cornelius and Mary had moved to Aviemore at Kurumbilla, Dalby, QLD where Cornelius was a Grazier until his death in 1960. Mary moved into Dalby where she died in 1987.
