Private Ernest Nicholas O'Connor (Service Nos:Q99607/QX40302) initially enlisted in the ACMF on 13 March 1941 with 5th Division Petrol Coy, and was attached to 26th Australian Coy ASC when he enlisted 'in the field' in the AIF on 11 September 1942. Marched Out to 31 Infantry Battalion, Private O'Connor (graded Driver Mechanic) was attached to 157 Australian General Transport (AGT) Coy when he served in Merauke (26 May 1943 - 19 September 1945). Private O'Connor was attached to Petrol Coy AASC at Discharge on 24 September 1945. Older brother Dennis also served in WWII, and son Ernest served in the Vietnam War.

The second of four children, Ernest was born in Brisbane QLD in 1913 to Patrick O'Connor (b1888 in Toowoomba, QLD) and Emily Elizabeth Tuckett (b1891 in Brisbane, QLD). Patrick (a Carter) and Emily (a Tailoress) married in 1911 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family and Patrick worked as a Carrier/Carter.

Ernest worked in Brisbane as a Labourer and Storeman before enlisting in the Army. In 1945 in Brisbane he married Jessie Jardine Kerr (b1922 in Stirlingshire, Scotland) - Jessie immigrated in 1925 with her parents and siblings, arriving in Brisbane on board the Jervis Bay. Ernest Discharged from the Army in 1945 - stating that he would be employed as a Tile Fixer (NAA). He and Jessie were livng in Brisbane when he died in 1947, and his son Ernest Jnr was born in the week following his father's death. Jessie later remarried.
