Alexander Carmichael was born at Bailieston, via Nagambie, Victoria in 1878 to parents Ellen and James McLean Carmichael.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 4th September, 1917 stating he was a 38 year old, single, Horse-driver from Westonia, Western Australia.
Private Alexander Carmichael, Service number 6302, embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on HMAT Persic (A34) on 29th December, 1916 with the 7th Infantry Brigade, 28th Infantry Battalion, 18th Reinforcements & disembarked at Devonport, England on 3rd March, 1917.
Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
On 3rd March, 1917 Private Carmichael was marched in from Australia to Rollestone, Wiltshire to 7th Training Battalion.
He was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire on 24th March, 1917 suffering from influenza. Broncho pneumonia developed on 1st April, 1917.
Private Alexander Carmichael died of Broncho Pneumonia on the morning of 20th April, 1917 at Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire, England.
A death for Alexander Carmichael, aged 39, was registered in the June quarter, 1917 in the district of Amesbury, Wiltshire. (The information on the Roll of Honour – provided by next-of-kin states Alexander Carmichael was aged 46 at the time of his death.)
He was buried in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
