Mr Ettie Pau OAM
Mr Ettie Pau OAM, was born on Darnley Island and is proud of his many achievements which he attributes to hard work and lots of experience.
Mr Pau spent many years working in the trochus and pearling industry as a dive skipper and joined the army in 1941 to serve in the Torres Light Infantry Battalion.
In 1985 Mr Pau was presented with the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) by the Governor General of Queensland in recognition of his many years of honorary service to the Torres Strait community.
Some of the issues he has been involved in were: helping to establish the Federal Council for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Advancement League for Human Rights; Torres Strait representative in their effort to achieve equal rights for Aboriginal and Islanders and the right to vote; helping to obtain army back-pay and compensation fro Torres Strait ex-servicemen; establishing the Torres Strait Returned Services League.
Mr Pau was a councillor for Tamwoy Town, a member of the Eligibility Review Committee and involved in setting up many other community organisations.
Being a self educated man, Mr Pau was particularly proud when he was granted an Aboriginal overseas study award in 1976. He used the award to visit the Cook Islands in the Melanesian Group and the Loyalty Islands in Micronesia for 3 months where he studied the Pacific Island cultures.
