Staff Sergeant William Thomas Payne (Service Nos:Q41764/QX33633) initially enlisted in the ACMF as a Private attached to 49 Battalion Details (16 December 1940 - 29 July 1942), and was 'in the field' on Thursday Island when he enlisted in the AIF on 30 July 1942. Staff Sergeant Payne served with Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion until Discharge on 19 February 1946.
Eldest of three children, Bill was born in Brisbane QLD in 1919 to William John Payne (b1899 in Brisbane, QLD) and Ethel Maude Sawden (b1898 in Brisbane, QLD). William and Ethel settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and William worked as a Labourer.
Bill was a Labourer in Brisbane in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army, and in Brisbane in 1945 married Phyllis Irene Meteyard (b1923 in Brisbane, QLD). Following his Discharge from the Army, Bill and Phyllis settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Bill worked as a Wool Presser. Phyllis died in 1969 and Bill in 1987.
