Daughter of Cyril Aubrey BELL, 4 Davidson Street, Oakey, Queensland.
Wife of Allen PHILLIPS SX22089, 4 Kelfield Street, Toowoomba, Queensland.
Daphne is a veteran of the Second World War. Before her war service, she worked as a legal secretary. Daphne joined the Australian Women’s Army Service (AWAS) in January 1945, aged 19. After her recruit training at the main AWAS training camp in Ingleburn, NSW, she attended clerical school at 2 Army Trades Training Depot (2ATTD) in Camperdown, Sydney. After completing her training, Daphne served at 2ATTD as a staff member, working in administration.
After the war ended, she was promoted to corporal. Daphne was discharged from the AWAS in November 1945, and she says she was proud to help the war effort. After the war, Daphne worked in disability logistics.
While serving, Daphne married Allen Phillips, a signaller in the Army, who had served in Darwin and was then posted to 2ATTD. The couple went on to have 5 children and now have a large extended family. Allen sadly died in 1977.
In 1993, Daphne married Aubrey Hooper, but sadly he died 3 years later. Aubrey had served in the British Army.
Daphne says her long life can be attributed to her perseverance.
