Percy was the sixth of eight children of Robert Morrison Phister (born 1863 in Ipswich, QLD) and Janet King (born 1871 in Leyburn, QLD). In 1890 Robert was a Labourer when he married Janet - they settled on the Darling Downs in QLD to raise their family.

In 1934 Percy was a Labourer at Millmerran when he married Lillian (Thelma) Christina Anderson (born 1913 in Toowoomba, QLD). They settled at Millmerran on the Darling Downs, QLD and in May 1942 Percy enlisted in the ACMF. He was a Private (Service No:Q141487) with 1 Garrison Battalion when he was Discharged in December 1943. Percy's Uncle, Alfred Phister (aka John Luscombe) served in the Boer War (Trooper, Service No:1437); Brothers Roy (Private, Service No:6551) and George (Private, Service No:6547) served in WWI; and Samuel (Leading Aircraftman, Service No:77496), Cyril (Private, Service No:QX1038), Clarence (Leading Aircraftman, Service No:23633) and Gordon (Staff Sergeant, Service No:QX16310); and Brother-in-Law David George Ashlin (Sapper, Service No:QX29717) also served in WWII.
