Kenwyn Neville Pocock - Q144461 – Wooroolin WW11 Honour Board

Kenwyn Neville Pocock was born 28 Nov 1917 at Nurse Stays Nursing Home, East Brisbane, child of Gilbert & Emily Pocock per an article in The Queensland, Saturday 8 Dec 1917. His Army Records show place of birth as Wooroolin!
The first record found for Kenwyn is his army record when he joined the Australian Army in Wondai on 28 Apr 1941. His next of kin named as his father Gilbert Pocock, QN Bank Wooroolin. He had been transferred from Beaudesert to Wooroolin in May 1940.
Kenwyn was a Café Proprietor and Shopkeeper and he owned what I remember as the cafe owned and run by Jimmy & Jessie Houston. Kenwyn’s army records are available on the NAA website and show that he was assigned to the General Details Depot (GDD) and later to the Queensland Line of Communications Records (Q L of C). He was cased in Woolloongabba, Warwick & Townsville before being discharged on 25 Mar 1945. His army files are available online and record that he was AWOL for several months in 1944 but it appears this was changed to be absent without pay. He certainly had many medical challenges with skin disorders.
Kenwyn married Jessie Marshall, the youngest daughter of Fred & Catherine Marshall on 7 Jul 1942 probably at the Presbyterian Church Wooroolin. Jessie’s father is the man who owned the Wooroolin Post Office and also the father of Mavis Marshall, QX55058 - Army Nurse, whose story was post of the Kinga~All site last July. Stan Marshall who supported me so much as Rural Youth Advisor was her brother.
Kenwyn & Jessie were involved with the Wooroolin Branch of the Australian Comforts Fund. Kenwyn got a mention as being Treasurer for a short time in 1942 in the Final Report written and read by my grandmother Lizzie Jones in 1946. Their sons Garth & Greig were born whilst in Wooroolin. Greig was 7 months old when, in 1949, his family sold their café to Jimmy & Jessie Houston and moved to Scarborough. June Stebhens tells us that Jessie made the best meat pies ever so I guess the Wooroolin community missed her!
Kenwyn & Jessie ran another General Store at Scarborough which sold Hardware, Haberdashery, Drapery as well as foodstuffs.
Kenwyn died in 1997 and is buried at Redcliffe Cemetery where Jessie joined him in 2007.
