Norman was the third of six children of Alexander Elgin Porter (born 1881 in Bundaberg, QLD) and Jane Fuller (born 1881 in Toowoomba, QLD). Alexander and Jane married in 1902 in Toowoomba, QLD and raised their family in Pittsworth on the Darling Downs in QLD, where Alexander was a Farmer and Grazier. Jane died in 1914, shortly after the birth of daughte May. In 1918 Alexander was married to Elizabeth Talbot (born 1881 in Ireland).
In 1930 Norman married Hester Elizabeth Andersen (born 1910 in Bowen, QLD) and the couple moved to Richmond,QLF where Norman worked as an Ice Maker. In 1934 they moved to Townsville, where Norman worked as a Fitter. Norman enlisted in the Australian Army in August 1940, and served as a Sapper (Service Nos: QX19248/Q14642) with 3 Workshops and Park Coy. Brother Lex served in the RAAF (Service No: 23516) as did Brother-in-Law William George Drew (Service No: 24534)
Following his Discharge in June 1944, Norman and Hester divorced and Norman worked in Clermont, QLD as a Tractor Driver. In 1950 in Brisbane, QLD, Norman married Ethel Ruth and they lived in Brisbane QLD - Norman working as a Mechanic, and Ethel as a Clerk - beofre moving to Graceville in 1963. Norman died at Woody Point in Qld in 1991.
