Private John Victor Rice (Service No:Q213174) served in the ACMF with 1 Battalion (QLD) VDC from 9 April 1942 to 27 August 1943. Older brother Albert (Lieutenant; Service No:457) served in the AIF in WWI.
John was born in London, England in 1901, sixth of eight children of Samuel Jeremiah Rice (b1867 in Middlesex, England) and Alice Mary Williams (b1869 in Staffordshire, England). Samuel and Alice married in 1889 in West Ham in Essex, where they settled and raised their family and Samuel worked as a Soap (Cutter/Stamper) Factory Labourer and Sugar Refiner.
John served in the Merchant Navy and was a Steward Boy on board the Ionic when he arrived in Sydney NSW in 1918. In 1924 John was a Labourer in Rockhampton, QLD when he married Agnes Emily Hermoine Stiller (b1899 in Rockhampton, QLD). John and Agnes settled in Rockhampton, where they raised their family and John was a Labourer. Agnes died in 1950 and John in 1959.
