Arnold was the third of six children of Joseph Arthur Richards (born 1888 in Gympie, QLD) and Isabella Jane Flannigan (born 1889 in Ipswich, QLD). Joseph - a Coal Miner - and Isabella married in Ipswich, QLD in 1912 and settled there to raise their family.

Arnold was a Coach Painter in Ipswich, QLD when he enlisted in the ACMF in September 1940. He served as a Private (Service No:Q13921) on Thursday Island with 7 Field Coy RAE and 1 Bomb Disposal Coy RAE. Arnold was Discharged in 1945. Brother Leslie (Lance Sergeant; Service Nos;Q60301/QX44859) also served in WWII.

In 1946 Arnold married Doreen Margaret Smeeton (born 1925 in Injune, QLD). They settled in Ipswich where Arnold worked as a Coach Painter. Doreen died in 1967 and Arnold in 1994.
