John was the youngest child of William Henry Richards (b1890 in Ipswich, QLD) and Annie Winifred Godbolt (b1893 in Penrith, NSW). William - a Miner - and Annie married in 1910 in Ipswich, QLD where they settled until Annie's death in 1925.
John was a Labourer in Brisbane, QLD when he enlisted in the Army in August 1942. He was a Private (Service Nos:QX39067/Q3916) attached to 2/12 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in April 1946.
John was working as a Station Hand at Sheep Station Creek in Kilcoy, QLD in 1958 when he married Dorothy Jean Tones (b1922 in Kilcoy, QLD). John and Dorothy settled in Kilcoy where John worked as a Station Hand before moving to Stathpine in the 1960s, where John was a Labourer. John died in 1974 and Dorothy in 2005.
