Les was the second of five children of James Cecil Richards (born 1884 in Ipswich, QLD) and Clara Jane Markcrow (born 1884 in Rockhampton, QLD). James was a Carpenter in Ipswich, QLD in 1907 when he married Clara. They settled in Ipswich where they raised their family and by 1928 James was a Wagon Builder.

Les' Attestation Papers give his birth date as 27 September 1907 whilst his Birth Record lists his birth date as 23 September. Les was working as a Shop Assistant in Ipswich, QLD when he enlisted in the Australian Army on 19 September 1942. He was a Private (Service No:Q134645) attached to QLD General Details Depot (GDD) (Staff) when he was Discharged on 22 March 1946. Brother-in-Law Arthur William George Richards (Sapper, Service No:Q269687) and Sisters-in-Law Hazel Ruby Isabella Richards (Aircraftwoman, Service No:100201) and Constance Edna Richards (RAAF, Sergeant, Service No:93881) also served in WWII.

Les had a long engagement to Rita Raleigh Richards (born 1907 in Ipswich, QLD) as Rita cared for her father following the death of her Mother in 1930. Rita worked as Waitress and Shop Assistant and she and Les married in the mid 1960's. Les continued working as a Shop Assistant following his return from WWII, and in the mid 1960s started work as a Storeman and Packer. Rita died in 1986 and Les in 1989.
