My Grandfather
My paternal grandfather Albert Edward COWLING, signed up for duty for WW2 on 3rd June 1940 in Brisbane Qld. He did not use this name, but instead, used a fictitious name of Reginald Aubery RICHARDS, and the date of birth as 1st August 1891.
His wife, back in Sydney was not pleased at the suggestion when he told her he wanted to enlist, so he just packed his bags and left the family, headed for Queensland, and changed his name.
For many years none of the family could find him, he served his country overseas, and returned many years later. His wife had divorced him, and was in quite dire circumstances, his son, my father, was in South Australia with the RAAF. His elder daughter eventually located him, and they were reconciled.
Grandpa (pa) won the lottery in NSW and purchased a small home on the Central Coast of NSW at Phegan's Bay (Woy Woy) and lived there until his death in the early 1950's
