William was the eldest of two children of William Henry Richards (b1890 in Ipswich, QLD) and Annie Winifred Godbolt (b1893 in Penrith, NSW). William Snr - a Miner - and Annie married in 1910 in Ipswich, QLD. Following Annie's death in 1925, William Snr moved to Brisbane and in the 1940s was a Storekeeper at Nundah.

William was an Ice Carter at Coolangatta on the Gold Coast and in 1941 he married Marie Winifred Young (b1916 in Currumbin, QLD) in Murwillumbah, NSW. William and Marie settled at Coolangatta on the Gold Coast in QLD, and in November 1943 William enlisted in the Australian Army. He was a Lance Corporal (Service Nos:QX59405/Q29007) attached to 61 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in December 1945.

William and Marie lived in Coolangatta and Palm Beach on the Gold Coast, where William worked as a Labourer. He died in 1989 and Marie in 2000.
