Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Doug was the youngest of six children of Robert Joseph Riddell (b1890 in Gympie, QLD) and Alice Butler (b1888 in Gympie, QLD). Robert (a Miner) and Alice married in 1912 in Gympie where Robert worked as a Miner. By 1923 the family had moved to Ipswich where they raised their family and Robert worked as a Miner.

Doug was eighteen years of age in 1946 when he enlisted in the Australian Army - serving for two months (March to May) as a Private (Service No:QX500093). Brother Robert Colin (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:77587) served with the RAAF.

In 1955 Doug was working as a Miner in Ipswich, QLD when he married Elizabeth Florence Hannah (b1935 in Millaa Millaa, QLD). The couple settled in Ipswich where Doug worked as a Miner before retiring to Kirra on the Gold Coast. Elizabeth died in 2011 and Doug in 2012.
