Ron was living in Brisbane, QLD in 1941 when he enlisted in the Australian Army, where he served as a Gunner and Sergeant (Service No: QX23568) with 2/4 Anti Aircraft Regiment 7th Battalion.

His younger brother Stanley Thomas was killed in 1933 on the Indooroopilly Golf Links in Brisbane - Ron and Stanley were registered Golf Caddies at the lLinks and were caddying there on 21 May 1933 when Stan was struck in the head by a golf ball and killed. The golfer who hit the ball, subsequently financed Ron's studies.

Ron married Dorothy (Peg) Cansdale in Brisbane, QLD in 1947, and then worked as an Accountant in Gympie, QLD until 1958 when the family returned to live in Fairfield, Brisbane, QLD where Ron continued as an Accountant and became a Justice of the Peace in the 1970s
