Biography contributed by Peter Thrupp

Too young for War:
As an ex-serviceman myself, I take a keen interest in servicemen in my family tree. My great uncle George Leslie ROOKER born in Roma, joined the Army 20 Sep 1916 with a declared age of 18 years old. He was sent to France but was medically returned to Australia and discharged 30 Nov 1917. In his army records it was mentioned he was “too young”.
I then returned to his birth date (05 Jun 1901) and realized he was only 15 years and 3 months when he joined.
He joined the Army again in WW2 and was a Sergeant in Comms Signals.
