Private Hector Ross (Service Nos:Q36301/QX20279) initially served in the ACMF with 42 Battalion from 24 March 1941, enlisting in the AIF on 29 April 1941. Private Ross served in the Middle East (13 September 1941 - 29 January 1942) with 18 Infantry Training Battalion, and with 2/9 Battion in New Guinea (7 August 1942 - 14 Jan 1943) - and was WiA (shell wound to arm) in New Guinea on 13 January 1943. Private Ross was attached to 2/9 Battalion at Discharge on 23 May 1944 (Medically Unfit).

Hector was born in Mackay QLD in 1918, second of three children of William Lyle Ross (b1884 in Lanarkshire, Scotland) and Henrietta Lindsay Callan (b1885 in Lanarkshire, Scotland). William (an Iron Worker) and Henrietta (a Domestic Servant) married in 1908 in Lanarkshire, Scotland, and immigrated in 1913, arriving in Brisbane QLD with their daughter on board the Perthshire. William and Henrietta settled in Sarina, where they raised their family and William worked as a Fireman (Boiler).

Hector worked in Sarina for the Plain Creek Mill Coy as a Fireman before enlisting in the Army. Following his Discharge, he returned to Sarina where he worked as a Labourer, Storeman and PMG Lineman. Hector retired to Armstrong Beach via Mackay, and died in 1984.
