Add my storyBiography contributed by Cherilyn McMeekin
Noel was the fourth of 10 children born to Harold and Beatrice ROSS, who married in New South Wales in 1908. Three of his six brothers also enlisted.
Noel's Queensland birth registration (1913/C/3463) indicates he was born in 1913, not in November 1914 as he claimed on enlistment in 1940. He wrote his age as 25 years, then crossed 25 out and wrote 24.
Noel was a POW on board the Italian transport ship Nino Bixio when it was torpedoed by a British submarine in the Mediterranean on 17 August 1942. The Nino Bixio was transporting Allied POWs from Libya to Italy. Norman was one of 122 Australian POWs to survive the incident.
He married in 1945 in Redfern, New South Wales, to Mary Jane WRIGHT and died in 1989 at age 75.
