John was the second of three children of John Roughead Snr (b1876 in Scotland) and Elizabeth Hannah Knight (nee Smith). John Snr arrived in Brisbane, QLD in 1877 aboard the Nairnshire, and was a Seaman when he and Elizabeth married in 1902 in Brisbane, QLD. John Snr and Elizabeth settled in Brisbane where John worked as a Carter and Labourer.

John worked as a Shop Assistant in Brisbane, and married Ivy May Holland (b1918 in Ipswich, QLD) in 1940 in Brisbane - Ivy also worked as a Shop Assistant. In May 1942 John enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:Q151777) and was attached to 10 HQ Field Baking Coy when he was Discharged in December 1945. Brother-in-Law Charlie Holland (Private; Service No:QX6508) and nephew Charles John Holland (Corporal; Service No:QX1327) also served in WWII.

John and Ivy remained in Brisbane, QLD where John worked as a Shop Assistant. He died in 1986 and Ivy later remarried - she died in 2005.
