Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the Monday of the 30th March 1953, Sapper Thomas William Wood, 3rd Australian Tunnelling Company (Reg No-6089), miner (Waratah Colliery, N.S.W.), from "Canberra", Avondale Road, New Lambton, New South Wales and 155 Croudace Street, New Lambton Heights, N.S.W., father of three?, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 65. PRESBYTERIAN-B14. 14.

Born at New Lambton, New South Wales on the 29th September 1887 to Mark Snr, died 15.10.1928, New Lambton, N.S.W., age 79, buried at ANGLICAN 2-136. 31, and Elizabeth Wood nee Stokes, died 9.1.1939, New Lambton, N.S.W., age 83, mother of 9, sleeping at ANGLICAN 2-136. 33; husband of Christina Wood nee Young, married 1921, New Lambton, N.S.W., died?, Tom enlisted on the 29th May 1916 with the Tunnelling Companies-September 1916 to February 1918 at Carrington, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on the 25th October 1916.

Admitted to hospital 10.3.1917 (bronchitis), 16.4.1917 (mental debility).

Wounded in action - 11.10.1917 (GSW face), 7.12.1917 (gassed, mild).

Transferred to England 23.12.1917.

Commenced return to Australia 15.4.1918.

Tom arrived home on the 12th June 1918, not being discharged medically unfit until the 12th November 1918.

Mr. Wood’s name has been inscribed on the New Lambton War Memorial Gates, Lambton and New Lambton Municipal District Roll of Honor, New Lambton Public School Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Tom’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
