Youngest of three brothers (Frank and Merv) who served in WWII; Signalman John Allen Rutherford MiD (Service Nos:161716/Q114338/QX60686) was a Gunner serving with 1st Mountain Battery when he was awarded a Mention in Despatches (MiD) on 27 April 1944 for 'Exceptional Service in the field in New Guinea' (AWM). On 5 April 1944 he enlisted 'in the field' in the AIF, and was attached to 5 Tele Op Section at Discharge on 21 February 1946.
John was born in Brisbane QLD in 1923, youngest of four children of John David Rutherford (b1892 in Brisbane, QLD) and Caroline Le Breton (b1893 in Brisbane, QLD). John Snr (a Plumber) and Caroline married in 1915 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family and John Snr worked as a Plumber and Motorman.
In 1945 in Brisbane, John married Isabella McCorkindale Bryson (b1921 in Brisbane, QLD). Following his Discharge from the Army, John and Isabella settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and John worked as a Carpenter, Draftsman and Quantity Surveyor. The couple separated in the early 1960s, and Isabella later remarried. John was in New Zealand in 1970 when he died.
