Story: Fred Sandiman
Sandiman also spelt Shandiman (PN482), born in Uma Gasamata (PNG), enlisted in 1943 and served in 1 Papuan Infantry Battalion of the Australian Army. In one of battles there he lost his life. His brother, Fred Shandiman, used to say, ‘My brother got killed in the war in Papua New Guinea’. His brother was always in his thoughts, especially when residents of Mackay gathered on Anzac Day. Returned soldiers were supposed to go and march, ‘but I don’t want to be in that’, he said, and ‘it makes me feel sad as I remember my brother…’. There was the third Sandiman (R914), also spelt Shandiman whose date and place of birth is unknown. He enlisted in 1945, served in the Australian Army, holding the rank of Corporal. This uncompleted record may be related to another brother of Fred, Tom ‘Tommy’ Shandiman.
