18 Oct 1914: Embarked Major, 1st Infantry Battalion, HMAT Afric, Sydney
25 Apr 1915: Wounded AIF WW1, Major, ANZAC / Gallipoli, Emb HMT "Minnewaska" ex Alexandria 5 Apr 1915 to join Gallipoli Campaign. One of the first wounded at Dardanelles on 25th April with a BW to neck and left ear. Redeployed to desk duties in Egypt but reoccurring headaches and vertigo resulted in him returning to Australia aboard "Kanowna", embarked Jan 1916, for discharge, unfit.

Major
 R. C. Dawson.— Major R. C. Dawson, of No. 1 Company, 1st Infantry Battalion (N.S.W.), A.I.F., is a well-known rifle man, and a member of the executive committee of the National Rifle Association of New South Wales. He visited Bisley [UK National Shooting Centre] some years ago with an Australian team, and won a prize in the 'Kings.' Major Dawson also commanded the team sent to Brisbane to compete in the Commonwealth Match which succeeded in winning that historic event by a considerable margin and also the 'Gordon Highlanders' match. His first commission was as a second lieutenant in the Australian Riffles in March 1905. He was promted to lieutenant in 1906, captain in 1909 and major on March 16, 1913. He was born on November 14, 1881 and resided st Roseville.
