Hector was the seventh of eleven children of Gustav Hermann Schmidt (1884 in Samsonvale, QLD) and Margaret (Maggie) Ann Bell (b1880 in Samsonvale, QLD). Gustav - a Farm Labourer - and Maggie married in 1903 in Samsonvale. By 1917 Gustav was a Dairy Farmer and he and Maggie lived in Kilcoy and Rochedale before moving to Nanango where Gustav was a Labourer.

Hector was a Labourer in Kilcoy QLD when he enlisted in the Australian Army in June 1941. he was a Corporal (Service No:QX19867) attached to 2/11 Field Ambulance when he was Discharged in December 1945. Brother Gilbert (Private; Service No:QX40008) served in WWII and brother Herbert (Bertie; Private; Service No:1400321) served in the Korean War.

In 1948 Hector married Myrtle May Larsen (b1924 in Kingaroy, QLD). Hector and Myrtle lived at Stuart Valley in Kingaroy where Hector was a Labourer. In the early 1950s they moved to Goodger in Nanango where Hector was a Farmer, before relocating to Togoolawah in the mid 1970s. Hector and Myrtle retired to Taabinga - Myrtle died in 1997 and Hector in 2005.
