Sergeant Norman Stanley Robinson West (Service No:5432) enlisted in the AIF on 26 January 1916 and embarked from Melbourne for Plymouth on HMAT Themistocles on 28 July 1916. In November that year he embarked for France on board the SS Victoria and was appointed Lance Corporal, Corporal and Sergeant whilst serving in France with 22nd Infantry Battalion. On 12 June 1919 Sergeant West embarked on board the HT Port Darwin for his return to Australia, and was Discharged on 10 September 1919. Two siblings (WIlliam and Charles) also served in WWI.

Born in 1892 at Lake Rowan in Victoria, Norman was the fifth of eight children of William West Snr (b1850 in Northamptonshire, England) and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Sims (b1851 in Lancashire, England). William had emigrated with his parents and siblings in 1852, arriving at Port Philip Bay in Victoria on board the Marlborough and was a Farmer at Lake Bolac, Victoria when he and Lizzie married in 1880. They lived in Lake Rowan and Fawcett, Victoria where William was a Farmer.

In 1916 Norman married Gertrude Constance Hine (b1892 in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria) and following his return from WWI, Norman and Gertrude settled in Corop at Rushworth in Victoria where they raised their family and Norman was a Farmer. In WWII Norman served in the ACMF (Lieutenant; Service No:V81050) and by 1944 he and Gertrude were living separately. In 1949 Norman was a Wood Merchant in Rochester nr Bendigo, Victoria and in the early 1950s was an Agent at Colbinabbin, Rochester in Victoria. In 1954 Norman moved to Mt Larcom at Kepple in QLD where he was a Farmer - son Lance William was also a Framer at Mt Larcomb. Norman died in 1963 in QLD and Gertrude in 1972 at Benalla in Victoria.
