Andrew was the youngest of two children of Andrew Smith Snr (born 1870 in Scotland) and Margaret (Maggie) Sinclair Gold Hunter (born 1873 in Scotland). Andrew Snr was a Tailor in 1901 in Renfrewshire,Scotland where he married Maggie. Their two children were born in Renfrewshire, where Andrew Snr worked as a Tailor and Clothier until 1911 when the family immigrated to Brisbane, QLD. Andrew Snr worked as a Tailor and Tailor's Cutter in Brisbane and at Oakley on the Darling Downs before the family settled in Goondiwindi, QLD in the early 1920's. Andrew Snr was a Tailor's Cutter in Goondiwindi. Following Maggie's death in 1939, Andrew Snr and his daughter moved to brisbane, QLD.

Andrew Jnr started work as a Shop Assistant and a Grocer in Goondiwindi, QLD, moving to Nambour in the early 1930s before settling in Gympie, QLD in 1936.

Andrew was a Shop Assistant in Gympie, QLD when he enlisted in the ACMF in March 1942. He was a Sergeant (Service No:Q135348) with 17 Works Coy when he was Discharged in April 1946.

In 1947 in Gympie, QLD Andrew married Gladys Maud Jefferson (born 1909 in Gympie, QLD). Maud was working as a Clerk and Andrew was a Shop Assistant. By 1958 Andrew and Gladys moved to Maryborough, QLD where Andrew was Department Manager. Andrew died in 1970 and Gladys in 1978.
