FREDERICK GEORGE LESLIE SMITH was born at Rockhampton, Queensland, on 1st November, 1891, the son of Mr. James Edwin and Mrs. Harriet Smith. He received his education at the State School, Rockhampton, and entered the service of the Bank on 28th December, 1908, at Longreach, Queensland. He was transferred to Isisford, as assistant, on 16th February, 1911; to Roma, as ledger-keeper, on 6th December, 1911; and to Eumundi, as teller, on 10th November, 1913.

Frederick Smith enlisted in the A.I.F. on 30th September, 1916, subsequently joining the 5th Light Horse Regiment. He was engaged on active service in Egypt, Sinai Peninsula and Palestine from February, 1917, to 28th June, 1919, being promoted to lance-corporal in September, 1918, and to sergeant in November of the same year.
