Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Arthur was the youngest of five children of William Pacey (born 1819 in London) and Mary Ann Maplesden (born 1827 in Kent). William - a Painter and Glazier - and Mary married in 1849 in London, and immigrated to Australia in 1857 on board the Golconda with their four children.

Arthur, born in Sydney NSW,  was a Painter and Decorator, and in 1896 married Mary Annie Durnford (nee Mann, born 1866 in Roma, QLD. Arthur and Mary lived in Murwillumbah in NSW, Proserpine, Goombungee and Ipswich in QLD and Arthur worked as a Painter and Decorator.

In November 1915 Arthur enlisted in the AIF, serving as a Trooper and Acting Band Corporal (Service No:2333) with the 2nd Australian Remount Unit. He had previous military experience with QLD Volunteers Reins and the 11th ALH Band. Arthur maintained a Diary (https://edurnfordnlogspot.com) where he records that 'after several unsuccesful attempts to enlist in a combatant unit I eventually passed for the Second Australian Imperial Remount Unit. The cause of my previous rejections was my age 48 years'. On December 22nd Arthur wrote 'Arrived at Sinai (Suez) at 4.30am ... We eventually arrived at Cairo at 12.50pm and were told that we had to march a mile to our camp and that it was all ready for us. But to our sorrow we had to march 11 miles to 'Maadi' camp where we arrived at 4.30am, dog tired and dead beat - not even a drink of water from the time we left the train. April 5th .... General Parade at 6.00 was finally passed for Aussie. What a relief. Think I am leaving this land of bones and mummies'.

Following his Discharge in 1916, Arthur and Mary lived in Ipswich, QLD where returned to work as a Painter and Decorator. They were living at Southport in 1919 and Arthur was a Fruiterer when Mary died.

Arhtur relocated to the Darling Downs and in 1922 at Toowoomba, QLD married Elizabeth Ford (nee Hagan, born 1897 at Grass Tree Creek Yandilla on the Darling Downs in QLD). Elizabeth's husband - Thomas Henry Ford (Service No:4655) was KIA near Polygon Wood in 1917.

Arthur and Elizabeth settled at Amiens in Stanthorpe, QLD where Arthur was an Orchardist. They moved to Warwick, QLD in the early 1930s and Arthur again worked as a Painter and Decorator. In 1937 he established the Pensioners' League for Aged and Invalid Pensioners (Comet Magazine), Arthur died in 1940 and Elizabeth in 1974.
