VERE GEORGE LOVETT SPOTSWOOD, son of Mr. Frederick Ernest Llewellyn Spotswood and Mrs. Isabel Jane Spotswood, was born on 7th February, 1894, at Townsville, Queensland, and educated at Townsville Schools. He entered the Bank's service on 3rd April, 1912, in that city.

On 8th August, 1914, V. G. L. Spotswood left Townsville for Thursday Island with the 1st Australian Garrison Artillery. He returned to Townsville in January, 1915, and enlisted in the A.I.F. on 8th March, joining the 25th Battalion, 7th Brigade, at Brisbane. He embarked on H.M.A.T. “Aeneas” for the Front on 29th June, 1915, having been promoted to corporal in the previous month. V. G. L. Spotswood served in Egypt and Gallipoli, landing at the latter place in September, and was promoted to the rank of sergeant on 1st November, 1915. He was in the evacuation of the Peninsula on 1st December, 1915, and arrived in France in March, 1916.

At Broodseinde Ridge, near Ypres, on 4th October, 1917, he received wounds, from which he recovered and returned to service. He was again wounded at the Hindenburg Line, near Beaurevoir on 3rd October, 1918, and was invalided to England. He left England on H.M.A.T. “Bakara” on 23rd December, 1918, and reached Australia in March, 1919.
