John Graham was a young soldier who fought for Australia in Word War 1. Enlistment papers say he was born in Terang, Victoria in 1885. As the war came about, enlistments began to open and all eligible men who were thought to be ‘strong’ and ‘brave enough’ to go, stood up for their country.
John Graham enlisted on 15th September 1914 as an early 29 old. It is stated he was not married and was previously a clerk. As his next of kin, John listed his brother C.A. Graham also from Lake View Terang, Victoria. Papers state that he was never convicted by civil power nor been previously rejected as a soldier and was therefore accepted.
John Graham fought for Australia in the blood thirsty war and throughout his experience, he was mainly ranked as a gunner but most likely helped out where needed.
On 16th of May 1918, John Graham returned to Australia from England. During the war, John had been in and out of hospitals according to his records. In 1916, two years before John’s discharge, he was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. John had been in France at the time and lasted two long years in the war whilst battling this diagnosis.
Almost 3 months later, August 1st 1918, John Graham passed away in Melbourne, Victoria due to his health condition. He was only 32 at the time and luckily made it back to his home country before passing.
