Roy was the eldest child of Albert Roy Achilles Stapleton (b1898 in Charters Towers, QLD) and Lucy May Boyce (b1900 in Ipswich, QLD). Albert (a Letter Carrier in Charters Towers, QLD) and Lucy married in 1921 in Brisbane, QLD. Albert served in WWI (Private; Service No: 7054) and was awarded the Military Medal for his actions at the Somme in 1918. Albert and Lucy settled in Nambour, QLD where Albert worked as a Labourer and Farmer. Albert's brother Augustine (Service No: 481) also served in WWI.

Roy was a Labourer in Sarina, QLD in 1939 when he enlisted in the ACMF. He served as Private and Trooper (Service No:412610) with 42nd Infantry Battalion and 2/14th Light Horse before enlisting in the AIF in June 1940. Roy served (Corporal; Service No:QX9335) with 10 Australian Despatch Rider Section, B Corps Signals and 2/2 Machine Gun Battalion in the Middle East (27 December 1940 - 24 March 1942) and New Guinea (28 August 1942 - 11 January 1943; 27 June 1943 - 19 July 1944 and 10 December 1944 - 20 September 1945). Roy was Discharged in October 1945. Roy's father and Uncle and two brothers also served in WWII.

Roy was in Adelaide, South Australia in 1943 when he married Lois Millis Chappell (b1906 in Adelaide, SA). They separated and in 1959 Roy married Hazel Madeline Fennell (b1923 in Penola, SA). Roy and Hazel moved to Colac in Corangamite, Victoria where Roy worked as a Boiler Attendant and Hazel as a Machinist. In the early 1970s they moved to Melbourne, Victoria where Roy worked as a Boiler Attendant. Hazel died in 1977, and Roy retired to Paynesville in Gippsland, Victoria where he died in 1989.
