Private Neil Steindl (Service Nos:Q135971/QX58357) initially served in the ACMF with 29 Infantry Training Battalion and 2 Machine Gun Training Battalion from 20 April 1942, and was 'in the field' on Thursday Island, attached to 5 Machine Gun Battalion on 2 October 1943 when he enlisted in the AIF. Private Steindl returned to Australia (Townsville) from Thursday Island in 1944 and transferred to 64 Infantry Battalion. From 2 May 1945 to 2 May 1946 Private Steindl served in Morotai and Ambon with 64 Infantry Battalion and 31/51 Infantry Battalion, and was attached to 64 Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 7 June 1946.

Neil was born in Bundaberg, QLD in 1923, eighth of ten children of Anthony (Tony) Steindl (b1883 in Bundaberg, QLD) and Myra Sheridan O'Brien (b1886 in Maryborough, QLD). Tony and Myra married in 1904 in Bundaberg, where they settled and raised their family, and Tony worked as a Tin Smith and Carter, and was involved in the Bundaberg horse racing community.

Neil was working as a Labourer in Bundaberg in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army, and in 1946 returned to Bundaberg following his Discharge. In 1950 Neil married Una Marion Marles (b1929 in Bundaberg, QLD) - they settled in Bundaberg where they raised their family. Neil was a Labourer and Factory Worker, and involved in the Bundaberg horse racing community as a Trainer. Una died in 2004 and Neil in 2009.
